How do I adopt a dog?
Step 1 - Complete an Application
The very first thing you need to do if you are interested in adopting through The Green Ark is submit an application. Whether you are interested in a specific pet or you want to get pre-approved for when that perfect puppy comes along... the application gets you started. You can complete an application here. During the application process, we will:
If you haven't met the pet that caught your eye yet, we can schedule a meet & greet. We can do this in a public place like a pet store, in a foster's home, or, preferably, in your home. We can even arrange for a trial overnight if desired.
Step 3 - Deposit
This can come at any point in the adoption process, but we do require a deposit (typically $100) to take a pet "off the market." Until a deposit is secured, any pet is available for adoption and we will continue to process applications as they come in. Please note, our deposit is fully refundable, transferable to another pet, and applies to your adoption fee. If you are interested in making a deposit, you can do so here.
Step 4 - Finalize

How can I help?
Are you a non-profit?
The Green Ark is a registered non-profit corporation in the state of Maine and a 501(c)(3).
How do I meet a specific dog?
We are more than happy to set up a meet & greet with you and your potential new family member. Our dogs are fostered all over the state, so please contact us to set-up a time and place.
Can you hold a dog for me?
This really depends on the situation. We can typically accommodate a couple of weeks, but please recognize that if you ask us to hold a dog for a longer period of time, we are unable to rescue a new dog in danger of euthanasia because the foster spot is full. We will do our best to help, but we will not endanger the lives of other animals to do so. Please contact us if you need additional information.
What dogs will be at your next event?
Please contact us to find out! We will do our best to accommodate these requests, but if you ask the morning of or night before, we might not see it in time to coordinate with the foster. We'd be happy to set up a one-on-one meet & greet if there is a specific pup you are interested in!
I need to surrender my dog. Will you take him?
Generally speaking, we do not accept owner-surrendered dogs in the state of Maine. Our priority is to save the lives of dogs in danger of being euthanized, not to assist in rehoming dogs that are already safe. Accepting an owner surrender means that a foster spot that would otherwise be available for a dog on death row is now occupied. This does not mean that we are a hard "no" every time. We review these requests on a case-by-case basis, but unless the dog is in some sort of danger, we typically would ask that you network within your friends and family to rehome your pet, or reach out to your local SPCA for help. If you have any additional questions, please contact us.
ARE YOU LICENSED?
Yes! We are licensed through the state of Maine to import and adopt dogs. MAINE LICENSE F1551 S.
