What is fostering?
Fostering is the act of providing a safe and loving home environment for our rescued pets to stay in while we find their forever home. Fostering is a temporary commitment that truly means the difference between life and death for these animals. Each person who is willing to foster means another dog or cat that we can save from euthanasia. Fosters play an integral role in the life-saving efforts of The Green Ark.
How long will I have my foster pet?
The average stay of a foster can vary, but it is generally between 2 to 8 weeks. Factors that can contribute to the length of a foster's stay include age, temperament, breed, and training. If The Green Ark suspects the stay of your pet may exceed the 8 week window, we will be sure to communicate that to you.
What are my responsibilities?
First and foremost, your primary responsibility is to provide a safe and loving home. These pets are coming from a shelter and often need a period of time to adjust to living in a home and being a member of the family. The best fosters recognize this need and work to help their pet come out of their shell. A well-adjusted dog will succeed in their forever home, and you are the first step in this journey.
A foster parent would be responsible for feeding and exercising their pet, as well as transporting them to and from veterinary visits. Your foster may need to be spayed or neutered while in your care, and we trust that you can provide a calm and healing environment. Some fosters may require additional medical attention for Heartworm, Ehrlichia, or other medical conditions. You will be made aware of any medications or special care needed up front.
